Wix Review (2021) | When (and When Not) to Use Wix

Welcome to the latest Wix platform review. It's 2021, and you are probably looking for some good ideas about Wix so you can start building your website for yourself or your business.

You have come to the right place. We are going to give you a full review about Wix - What are the Pros and Cons; and whether you should use it or not.

Introduction

Wix is a cloud-based web development service provider. They offer a simple drag and drop website development solution for non-technical users. Wix is the leading website builder with over 180 million users worldwide.

If you are looking to migrate from other platform like Wordpress, Squarespace, or Blogger then this post is for you. Here is a summary of what we will cover:

  1. Ease of Use
  2. Pricing
  3. Design
  4. SEO
  5. Flexibility

1. Ease of Use

Even though our website is built with Wix, we will try to be unbiased on this. We pick Wix in the first place because it is super easy to use. The overall user interface is very intuitive with small learning curve.

Wix offers two main choices for new user. You can build a Wix website with Wix ADI (Artifical Design Intelligence) or with Wix Editor

With Wix ADI, you are basically letting the computer making the website for you. All you have to do is answer a few questions about your business then you let WIX ADI do the rest. When the website is done, you can customize it to your liking and fill in the details before you publish your site.

With Wix Editor, it requires a little bit more skills as you will be designing your own website. You can drag and drop and use all the features that Wix has to offer to build your amazing website.

In February 2020, Wix announced its brand new platform that is optimized for speed and responsiveness. It is called Wix EditorX, an advanced website creation platform. Since then, Wix continues to optimize its new platform and add a lot of new features to encourage users to make the switch.

2. Pricing

This is one of the most popular question that people always ask. "How much does Wix cost?" or "Is Wix expensive?"

To answer this in full detail, let's take a look at their pricing plans

Regular Wix Pricing Plans

The price seems not too bad. As a small business owner, you want to choose the Unlimited package as you will have unlimited bandwidth when you have a lot of visitors.

If you have used Wordpress before, you'd probably have dealt with hosting services and you have to choose which package is the best for your website. With Wix, you do not have to worry about how much traffic is too much when you unlimited bandwidth.

My go-to plan is Unlimited because of the bandwidth reason, and you also get a free domain name for one year, two freemium apps subscription (1-year), no Wix Ads, 10GB storage.

The best thing is that you get to play around with Wix platform for free. You can publish a free Wixsite (with their domain name) to see if you like it or not. When you've finished designing your website, you can upgrade to a premium plan ANYTIME.

Whether you want to build a website, an online store, a portfolio, a forum, or a blog, Wix has it all. The only limit is your creativity.

4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

This is certainly the only topic that most professional website developers care about the most.

For those that do not know what SEO is, it is just a fancy name for getting organic traffic. Google doesn't know what your website is about, so you have to follow a certain guideline to make sure it is Search Engine friendly.

In fact, Wix provides its own SEO Wiz where it will guide you through the process and you will be able to do it. Wix automatically submit a new Sitemap.xml to Google Search Console as well as creating a new Robot.txt file every time there are new changes to your website.

SEO in itself is a whole full-time job as you will need to monitor and update your website to make sure your site ranking on Google is on point to get the optimal organic traffic. i.e. People who search a keyword and find out about your website without you paying for ads.

The only downside for Wix SEO is technical SEO, where speed plays a big role in this. Wix site speed is sluggish as it suffers from a huge amount of unnecessary code during loading time. That being said, we recently made a whole different article about How to Improve Your Wix Website Speed.

However, most website builders suffer from speed, unless you can develop a website from a framework. It can get ugly very quickly when you have to debug the website instead of having that time to improve your website content and offers to your potential customers. Even if you can hire a developer, that is some extra expense you have to deal with and your website needs constant care.

Overall, Wix website speed relies heavily on Internet speed and device types, so it something important you have to consider before going along with Wix or not. Perhaps "getting the website done first so you can take care of the rest of the business" is your goal, then you should go with Wix. It is very easy to use and you can manage your content through Wix powerful Content Management System.

5. Flexibility

Wix allows you to integrate with some of the most popular marketing platforms like Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, CrazyEgg, Hotjar, and so on. You can monitor and understand where your traffic is coming from. Create a full report with it, so you can come up with a long term Digital Marketing plan for your business.

Wix offers a lot of business solutions such as booking capability, payment processors, email marketing, multilingual, online store, subscription payment, etc.

Wix also let you connect to other email marketing platforms like Mailchimp or Privy. Even better, you can use Wix Ascend, an email marketing platform by Wix within the Wix platform. They do come at a price, so we suggest you do some research between different platforms to get the best deal.

One last thing, too much flexibility will result in a lot of confusion and conflict when you try to get your website online. The Do-It-Yourself movement seems to stay with Wix as many people want to make their own website. You should do some research about UI/UX design, psychology, copywriting, branding, etc. before you sign-up for a premium plan. Not only your website needs to look appealing, it has to be functional and is capable for the near future online marketing campaign.

Conclusion

Wix is a powerful platform for small business owners to explore their creativity & their brand images. If you have to compare it with Wordpress, it has its own unique perks that Wordpress doesn't have.

If you are just starting out, we strongly suggest that you go with Wix (or any other website builders that you think they fit your budget and other requirements). After a few years, when you want to have full control of your website, you can go for the custom website from your local agency.

Custom website is coded from scratch, from a framework with different modules put together to create your website. It can be very flexible and SEO friendly, but it can get very expensive very quickly because it involves a lot of steps and experts such as a UI/UX Designer, a Front-end Developer, a Back-end Developer, a Copywriter and a Digital Marketer.

We hope this article helps you see different aspects about Wix, and why you should or should not choose Wix to be your go-to platform. It depends on your business model.
